Bailey, a student from the specialist school Inscape House in Cheadle, part of the Together Trust charity, has been thriving in his work experience at Waterhouse’s Quality Food in Cheadle Hulme since January. This family-owned greengrocer has become a second home for him, and he’s making great strides on his path to independence.

Bailey has always dreamed of working and being independent, and the team at the family-run store has opened its doors to support him. Jen, the Managing Director, emphasises their commitment to the community, saying:
“We aren’t a corporate business, so we love being involved in the local community and helping out where we can. I know what it’s like being young and how important these opportunities to learn are.”
In his role, Bailey is taking on a variety of tasks—from stacking shelves to cutting fruit and even making smoothies. Jen mentions the valuable skills he’s picking up along the way: “He’s learning to communicate his needs, work with a team, and interact with customers. It’s been great to see him grow.”
Bailey’s transformation has been impressive. His support staff have noticed a boost in his confidence and maturity. He’s becoming more outspoken and has even tackled some of his sensory challenges, like cutting lemons and ginger without any issues.
Marie Young, the Careers Teacher at Inscape House School, shares her excitement about this partnership:
“Waterhouse’s Quality Food has been fantastic for Bailey—the staff are so welcoming and really make him feel like part of the team.”
This collaboration between Inscape House School and Waterhouse’s Quality Food aims to empower autistic students while encouraging local businesses to create more inclusive work environments. It’s all about breaking down barriers and changing perceptions of autism.
