Station Road
From Site
Station Road is pretty much the high street of Cheadle Hulme. It forms the district centre of the village, with the shopping centre, numerous banks, building societies, restaurants, pubs, offices, newsagents, supermarkets, hairdressers, three churches (Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church, the Quaker meeting house and the New Hope Community Church), homes, Oak Meadow Park and of course the railway station, which gave the road its name in 1845. It is possibly the busiest road in the area, as a main connection between Hazel Grove, Bramhall, southern Cheadle Hulme, Adswood, Cheadle and Heald Green.
Originally known as Cheadle Hulme Common Road, it formed a longer road with Ravenoak Road and Church Road. The part behind Blockbuster and Tesco Express used to form the main part of the road, but it was rerouted in 1967, replacing farmland in front. The road used to not be as wide, and was at best a windy country lane.

Station Road in 1900, opposite the entrance to the railway station. In those days, it was accessed by a flight of stairs (to the left of the people). Notice how empty the road is (well, it was 1900), and what looks like a bicycle left of the stairs. |
An interesting photo from 1927. It's an aeriel view of Station Road. The southern part of it seems quite built up, with buildings on both sides (though there is farmland where there are roads today). Up north past Pimlott's butchers (you can still see the sign on the wall today) are fields on both sides, where there are all shops today. Notice the footbridge over the station, removed in the 1960s when the lines were electrified. |
At the junction of Station Road/Albert Road/Queens Road/Ladybridge Road in January 1985. The crossing islands have improved somewhat significantly since then. Pictured is a milk float from Leather's farm on Ladybridge Road. |
