Notes

Originally known as Royal Schools for the Deaf, this special school was set up in 1823 by two Manchester merchants, Robert Phillips and William Batemen. Its original premises were in Salford, but this proved to be unsuitable so new premises were purchased in Old Trafford where the school remained until 1956, when the current Cheadle Hulme site was bought. The school operated across both sites until 1982 when all operations were moved to Cheadle Hulme.

The school changed its name in 2008 to Seashell Trust, since the old one was misleading; the school caters for all sorts of disabled children, not just those without hearing.

It is the oldest school of its kind in the north-west of England.
