National School
From Site
The National School was opened on May Day in 1873 as a response to the 1870 Education Act. It was built over farmland, and was situated on the corner of Hill Top Avenue and Church Road, opposite the church. Children came to this school from as far as Adswood and Bramhall, and course in those days they would have walked all that way! It originally held 182 children, and its close proximity to the church meant the two establishments had a strong connection, with the school being used for church meetings for many years before the church built their own hall in 1910.
In 1948 it became a Church of England school, but lost this status in 1956. For several years, it was used as an annexe to Woods Lane School, but by the late 1960s it was empty and it was demolished in 1973, replaced by a church hall and car park, which in turn were demolished and replaced by flats in 2007.
