Church Road
From Site
Church Road is a busy shopping street near the centre of Cheadle Hulme. It is one of the older roads in Cheadle Hulme, and was at one time part of a longer road named Cheadle Hulme Common Road in the Smithy Green hamlet. It later became Church Lane when its church, All Saints Church was built in 1863, and later got its current name. It connects Hulme Hall Road and Gill Bent Road with Ack Lane West and Ravenoak Road. Other than the church and shops, there was at one time two schools, both since demolished: National School and Jonathan Robinson School. The Church Inn is a pub situated close by at the junction of Ravenoak Road, and is named for the church.

This view from the junction with Hulme Hall Road was taken in 1910. It shows how rural the area once was, with the houses and the windy country road. There are a few people in the photo, and on the right side you can just see the Jonathan Robinson School. |
Much later on, this was taken on 22 April 1951 at the other end of the road, at the junction with Ack Lane West. The view shows the road, now less a country lane and more wider, though not as busy looking. On the right is the vicarage, shortly before the black and white part was demolished. |
This photo, taken on 4 April 1958, is a similar view to the first image. The buildings on the left have gone and been replaced by the institute; there is less greenery, and therefore a less rural feel, and the road is wider too. The Jonathan Robinson School is still there; however, it was demolished in 1962. |

Further west on 21 June 2009, on the left is the entrance to Hill Top Avenue, and on the right are various shops as well as the church hall. |
